How young may a student be?

Students may be as young as 5 years of age.

How old may a student be?

Students may be as old as dirt. As long as you are willing and able to train, you are welcome. Students are not required to compete, but if they do, regional tournaments have separate divisions for students over 35 years of age; and national tournaments have separate divisions for students over 30 years of age and separate divisions for students over 40 years of age.

What if I am physically or mentally challenged?

It all depends on your problem and how hard you are willing to train. Mr. Deese evaluates each prospective student's trainability before accepting him or her into the course of training. Some physically able students are rejected because of their trainability and many physically challenged students are accepted because of their trainability. Mr. Deese adapts the course of instruction and belt promotion requirements to accommodate special needs students. For example, a student who is physically unable to kick properly may be required to perform more hand techniques than other students or learn additional patterns. The standards are adapted to the students but they are NOT lessened, they are merely changed to accommodate special needs. We currently have a physically challenged black belt who, while unable to perform many kicks properly, has defensive and offensive hand techniques that overcome some of the best able fighters.

How many times a week should I train?

You should train at least 2 times per week. Ideally, you should train 3 times per week, every other day. Is

Taekwondo difficult to learn?

Taekwondo training is a methodic, step-by-step learning experience. Anyone, no matter their physical fitness level or physical abilities may learn and progress in Taekwondo. There is a degree of effort involved. You will sweat, you will get tired, and your muscles will ache, but only to the degree of effort that you put into the training. The benefits received from Taekwondo training will be worth the effort. Will I get injured? You will be exposed to minor injuries, such as blisters, bruises, small cuts, sprains, etc., depending on how intensely you wish to train. These minor injuries will decrease as your body grows stronger and you and your opponents become more skillful in blocking. Most Taekwondo students receive greater injuries from other physical activities they pursue, such as soccer, basketball, and softball.

How long are the classes?

Most classes last one hour. Sometimes a special class may last longer.

How long does it take to become an expert in Taekwondo?

A lifetime.

How long does it take to receive a black belt?

Do not worry about it. It will take as long as it takes. No matter how long it takes for you, it will seem like a short time. If you are promoted at the minimum required times, you may earn a black belt in a little over 2 years.

Why do students break boards in Taekwondo?

Board breaking is merely a way to give you feedback on the power of your techniques. Board breaking is just a training tool, do not become overly concerned with it. When you reach the point where board breaking is required, you will be ready for it and will have no problems.

Why do students train barefooted?

It is a tradition. It provides a tactile feel of the floor and helps in transmission of ki. There is also the oriental tradition of removing your shoes before entering a home. Another reason is to strengthen the feet and toughen thicken the skin.

Do I have to learn the Korean language?

No. You will learn a few key Korean words as you progress but it will not be a problem.

Is Taekwondo a religion?

Because of the bowing and other formal rituals of Taekwondo, some may believe it is some form of religion. Taekwondo is a martial art. It does not involve any religious beliefs. The rituals only show respect for the oriental roots of Taekwondo. The bow is a symbol of respect in eastern cultures, similar to a western handshake.

Do you teach weapons?

No. We only teach empty hand techniques.
